Managing patients in ICU with complex infections
The session will describe the evolving problem of AMR amongst Gram negative bacteria in the UK with particular reference to the ICU setting. The need for and value of improved rapid diagnostics for ventilator associated pneumonia will be discussed. The patterns of antimicrobial prescribing for VAP will be delineated and the potential use of more recently introduced beta-lactam agents described. Two real life cases of challenging dilemmas in the treatment of complex fungal infections will also be described whilst the approach to their management will also be considered.

Rapid molecular testing to guide antibiotic use in patients with severe pneumonia
Dr David Brealey will share his experience from the Inhale trial where a rapid multiplex molecular diagnostic assay was used to guide antibiotic treatment in HAP/VAP patients. He will discuss the impact on patient management care (illustrated by clinical cases) as well potential barriers surrounding its use into practice, such as clinician’s behaviour towards antibiotic prescribing.

Using Procalcitonin wisely in COVID-19: promises and facts
Bacterial co-infection is a significant risk factor for COVID-19 disease severity and adverse outcome. In recent studies, Procalcitonin (PCT) has identified COVID-19 patients at low risk for bacterial coinfection and adverse outcome. Emerging evidence has also indicated that PCT can help safely rationalize antibiotic use in COVID-19 cases.
