Dr Akshay Shah is a NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Intensive Care Medicine based in the Oxford Deanery. In 2017, he was awarded a NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship to undertake a DPhil to investigate the potential role of intravenous iron for treating anaemia in survivors of critical illness.

His main research interests are in the interface between critical care, perioperative medicine and haematology, with a focus on characterising iron status and erythropoiesis in inflammatory states, evaluating the benefits and risks of common interventions used to treat and prevent bleeding, and implementing patient blood management.
