Ben is a consultant in intensive care medicine working at Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. His undergraduate training was in Southampton and postgraduate in London. Obtained his PhD in 2011 and CCT in respiratory, general and intensive care medicine in 2012.

He’s the current chair of the UK critical care research group (www.ukccrg.org) and the regional research lead for Kent, Surrey and Sussex. He’s the co-chair of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine’s Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine section.

His main research interests are the prevention of complications of surgery (pulmonary, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, neurological and muscular), and the complications of sepsis, particularly pneumonia. He supervises MD/PhD students at the University of Surrey. He is involved in several trials and studies, including www.squeezestudy.com, INSPIRE, A2B, and SINFONIA.

Ben has two children, two cats and a dog. His wife is also a consultant physician. In his spare time, he listens to music, cooks and is trying to learn python. @drbencb
