Derek has been the National Nurse Lead for Adult Critical Care in Ireland for 6 years. He is Chair of a National Steering Group for Critical Care Nurse Education and Workforce Planning, which have published 2 National reports on Critical Care Nurse Workforce Planning in Ireland, most recently in September 2021, overseeing Critical Care Nursing Workforce expansion in line with Capacity expansion.

He was a member of the Guideline Development Group for the Irish National Early Warning System (INEWS) 2 and has led the development of ANP Critical Care response teams for deteriorating patients across all Model 4 Hospitals, as recommended within INEWS V2, and is currently working to expand this service to Model 3 Hospitals.

Derek has a Post Graduate Diploma in Critical Care Nursing with over 20 years’ experience in Critical Care. He has a Masters in Healthcare Management, and works with the graduate school of healthcare management in the RCSI, where he supervises Masters students completing Change Management projects and was previously an ACLS Instructor. He is a Fellow of the RCSI Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery and a Clinical Associate with both the Faculty and the Graduate School of Healthcare Management. He is a former Chair of the Irish Association of Critical Care Nurses, and is currently working with the British Association of Critical Care Nurses on the 1st British and Irish Critical Care Nurses Associations conference in Belfast in October 2022
