State of the Art 2020

Dr Lara Prisco graduated in Medicine in 2007 and trained in Anaesthetics, Intensive Care and Hyperbaric Medicine in 2012 at the University of Trieste (Italy) starting off her research activities exploring traumatic brain injury outcome predictors and neurophysiology biomarkers of recovery of consciousness following brain injury, after a Research Fellowship spent at the Coma Science Group in Li├Ęge (Belgium).

In 2012, she moved to the UK as Clinical Fellow in Intensive Care at the General Intensive Care Unit of the University College Hospital in London and in the same year obtained the first Fellowship in Echocardiography in Critical Care at St.George’s Hospital. Afterwards, Dr Prisco completed her advanced training in Neuroanaesthesia and Neurointensive Care Medicine at both the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit (National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, UCLH London) and Neurosciences Critical Care Unit (Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge).

In 2015 she was appointed Locum Clinical Lecturer at the University Department of Anaesthesia at the University of Cambridge and collaborated in several large multi-centre studies in NeuroCritical Care.

Dr Prisco also participated in several others highly competitive graduate programs related to Space Medicine (European Astronaut Centre, European Space Agency), Brain Plasticity (Neuroscience Department, Utrecht University), and International Bioethics (Harvard Medical School, Harvard University). In 2013 she obtained a MSc in Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine at the Catholic University in Rome (Italy) and, since May 2016, she works as Consultant in Neuroanaesthesia and Neurocritical Care at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and has taken up the role of Research Lead in Neurocritical Care.
As Senior Clinical Research Fellow at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences of the University of Oxford, Dr Prisco is a part of the Anaesthesia Neuroimaging Group (Lead Dr Catherine Warnaby, WIN), exploring EEG/fMRI biomarkers of anaesthetic-induced unconsciousness and since October 2018 Dr Prisco is a part-time DPhil Student (PRS) in Clinical Neurosciences. Dr Prisco is also interested in the clinical and research development of Continuous ElectroEncephaloGraphy in Critical Care (CCEEG) and is leading the CCEEG service in Oxford.

Founder and Chair Elected of the NEXT Committee of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) from 2013 to 2016, Dr Prisco is also the past Deputy Chairperson of the Neurointensive Care Section and former Research Committee member of ESICM.

Dr Prisco is current member of the Women In NeuroCritical Care section of the Neurocritical Care Society and co-chaired, until 2018, the Task Force on Diversity and Equality of ESICM and has supported the establishment of its 3 working group focussing on gender, social, and multidisciplinary issues in Intensive Care Medicine.
