In 2016 Lu Spinney published a memoir, Beyond The High Blue Air, about her son who endured five years in a minimally conscious state following a TBI
Her experience as a parent looking after her son and witnessing his care in different institutions stimulated her interest in disorders of consciousness and
end of life issues, especially preservation of dignity and the right of self determination.
She has spoken at venues including UCH and Dignity in Dying’s annual conference, was involved in Compassion in Dying’s national TV and radio
campaign to raise awareness of Advance Directives, and has written on the subject for various publications including The New York Times, Sunday Times,
Independent and Guardian.
