Dr Sai Bhagra is a consultant cardiologist at Royal Papworth hospital. Along with the multi-disciplinary team at UK’s largest heart transplant centre, he is involved in treating patients with advanced heart failure.
Following 2 years as a fellow with the Scottish National Advanced Heart Failure Service, Glasgow, he completed specialist training in Cardiology in the Northern Deanery. His subspeciality training in advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support and cardiac transplantation was at Freeman hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne. He then took up position as Ted Rogers Clinical Fellow in advanced heart failure at Toronto General Hospital; the largest cardiac transplant and MCS centre in Canada.
Sai maintains an active research interest and was shortlisted for the Philips Caves Award at the 2015 annual meeting of the International Society of Heart and Lung transplantation (ISHLT) for his research into long term changes in the aortic root and left ventricular dimensions in patients supported with the HeartWare LVAD. In 2016, Sai was awarded the Transplant Registry Early Career Award by ISHLT in Washington DC for examining the impact of pre-transplant MCS in the development of allograft vasculopathy. Sai is currently updating the BTS guidelines on prevention and management of CMV disease and infection following solid organ transplantation.
